About CARE-KY

The Collaborative Approach to Raising Education and Immunization in Kentucky (CARE-KY) aims to help community pharmacies improve access to immunizations across 10 Kentucky counties. The program is a collaborative effort between the Kentucky Pharmacists Association and the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy's Center for the Advancement of Pharmacy Practice. It was funded through a grant from the Kentucky Department of Public Health.

On this page, you'll find CARE-KY resources, including planning worksheets, links to state and national publications, and community resource guides developed as part of the project.

Community Resource Guides

In Spring of 2025, CARE-KY worked with the UK Cooperative Extension Service in several counties to produce community resource guides. The guides list local services related to health, food, employment, education, housing, and more. Download and print these guides to share with patients at your pharmacy or community events.

Also check out the Fayette County Pharmacy Services Guide to help patients find clinical services in community pharmacies.

Please note: These guides are not being updated and may included services that have been discontinued or changed.

Vaccine Schedules and Recommendations

Several organizations issue vaccine recommendations. This list contains just some of the recent guidance documents for various patient populations that may be served in a community pharmacy. Make sure that the clinical recommendations you make to patients are supported by the literature and permissible under your immunization protocol.

Managing Adverse Effects

Written reminders for emergency response can help keep staff calm and ensure they follow best practices. The following are examples from the Immunization Action Coalition:

Promoting Events and Improving Vaccine Confidence

Immunization event promotion is a good opportunity to address vaccine hesitancy and provide public education about vaccines. Review these resources related to vaccine hesitancy and consider incorporating items into the promotion of your event.

The UK Cooperative Extension Service provides health bulletins to communicate about many important public health topics. Check out these bulletins focused on immunization:

Make sure everyone staffing an event is ready to engage and educate the community about the benefits of immunization. These talking points and communication resources may help:

Billing for Counseling on Vaccine Hesitancy

Did you know Kentucky Medicaid pays pharmacists for safety counseling related to vaccine hesitancy?  The Kentucky Pharmacists Association offers education, resources, and assistance with the billing process. Visit KPhA's website for more information!
